Rec Room Shelves
They may not look that interesting, just some cedar planks used as shelves, but their history is more than a little unique. When my Dad was traded from Montreal to St Louis back in the 70's, he lived with a teammate and bought these shelves from a lumbar yard for their little apartment. When he moved back to Grosse Isle in 1980, they made the trek with him, then stayed up in my parents basement as a sort of trophy case. They initially housed my Dad's many accomplishments, in hockey, curling and baseball, but were slowly taken over by the many sporting awards and recognitions of another Lefley (circa 1987). Then, sometime between 1998 and 2005, my mom finally convinced him to downsize, and the shelves were stored down at the farm, left there for anyone who thought to use them. When my husband and I finally bought our own home, more than a decade later, we had grand plans for a bar set up in our rec room. In chatting about our ideas with our parents, my Dad piped up and said " I think I've got what you're looking for" and next thing you know, they were on our doorstep. My father-in-law then cut them to size and even made a custom mantel for above the fireplace with some of them. Below you can see a replica drawing of how they were in my parents basement, and photos of our current bar and mantle. They were exactly what we wanted for the bar, and they only cost us the price of a few screws and brackets.
